Earth Economics announces new Executive Director

Maya Kocian, Executive Director of Earth Economics

The Board of Directors of Earth Economics is pleased to announce that Maya Kocian has accepted the position of Executive Director. Maya has been with Earth Economics for over a decade, serving in several roles, including Senior Economist, Senior Program Director, and Managing Director.

As Executive Director, she will lead all aspects of program development and management, and will continue to propel Earth Economics to deliver on our mission–to quantify and value the benefits nature provides, and communicate that value through education, natural capital analyses, and policy guidance. Maya's long history with staff, partners, strategy and programs, as well as her leadership in the field of Ecological Economics, will ensure that our work continues to be of the highest value to our partners and clients.

“I am honored and have immense respect for Earth Economics’ mission,” said Kocian. “Between climate change, environmental injustices, and biodiversity loss, now more than ever, it is critical that we acknowledge the value that natural capital provides to people.”

Her long experience with applied Ecological Economics, combined with her steady vision and extensive record of success, will help Earth Economics continue to grow in influence, building more impactful partnerships, deepening the rigor of our analyses, and effecting positive and equitable outcomes.

“Maya’s ability to connect the value of nature to drive pragmatic solutions to pressing environmental and equity concerns makes her an ideal leader to increase our impact,” said Ingrid Rasch, Chair of Earth Economics’ Board of Directors.

In addition to her experience in natural capital valuation and management, Maya enjoys traveling and has lived in both Chile and Ireland. An avid recreationist, she loves hiking and scuba diving. Wherever she finds herself, Maya is sure to find ways to connect with nature, on land or sea.

We look forward to continuing to chart Earth Economics’ future with Maya, developing and applying practical solutions that enable communities, economies, and ecosystems to thrive together.
